Developers Use AI Every Day. Most Still Won't Trust It Without Checking.
Stack Overflow's 2026 survey of 30,000+ technologists shows near-daily AI adoption — and conditional trust. The differentiating skill is verifying what AI produces.

Stack Overflow's 2026 Developer Survey, based on 30,903 responses from 169 countries, shows AI is now embedded in daily development work. Two-thirds of respondents use AI coding assistants or agents, and 73% of their users use them daily — with nearly a third of daily users spending four or more hours a day with these tools.
Attitudes remain broadly positive: favourable views of AI outweigh unfavourable ones by nearly 3 to 1. But favourable does not mean unconditional.
Trust is earned per task, not granted up front. 48% of respondents say they trust AI only when they can easily validate its answers, and just 16% extend that trust to tasks that are not important work decisions. Human-in-the-loop remains the dominant way of working: the most common uses are familiar code and debugging or refactoring, where the developer can judge the output.
The survey also captures a strained workplace. 32.6% of respondents say they are not happy at work and 45.1% describe themselves as complacent, while freelancing jumped from 3.9% to 10.5% in a single year.
Takeaway
Using AI is now table stakes. What stands out — in hiring and in the work itself — is the judgment to check what AI produces: reading the code it writes, testing what it claims and catching what it gets wrong. That verification skill is what employers still cannot get from the tool.
