RBI tightens cybersecurity scrutiny of banks after a series of cyberattacks

Today's News & Updates Saturday, 31 October 2026 India edition · AI, technology, business, education & careers

Today's developments point towards an important shift: AI is creating new business opportunities, but companies are becoming more selective about where they invest, whom they hire and what skills they expect.

There are also important developments in banking cybersecurity, higher education, AI infrastructure and India's technology workforce.

Here are today's most relevant stories.

1. RBI tightens cybersecurity scrutiny of banks after a series of cyberattacks

High importance Reuters · 30 October 2026

The Reserve Bank of India is increasing cybersecurity scrutiny of banks and lenders.

The regulator is asking financial institutions to demonstrate compliance with existing cybersecurity requirements and assess vulnerabilities in their systems, particularly APIs.

This development follows several reported cyber incidents involving financial institutions.

Reuters reported that data belonging to approximately 3,900 State Bank of India customers was leaked. It also reported that two Mumbai-based non-bank lenders lost approximately $2 million through more than 700 unauthorised transfers on 8–9 October.

One reported attack involved the compromise of an API used to send loan-disbursement instructions to ICICI Bank.

The RBI is also examining whether financial institutions are adequately prepared for AI-related cybersecurity risks. Smaller lenders and third-party technology vendors are considered particularly vulnerable.

Why are APIs such an important security concern?

APIs allow different software systems to communicate. Banks use them to connect payment systems, loan platforms, customer applications and external service providers.

If an attacker obtains API credentials or exploits weak access controls, they may be able to initiate unauthorised actions without directly accessing a bank's main systems.

As financial institutions introduce more automation and AI-powered services, protecting these connections becomes increasingly important.

What this means for technology professionals:

Cybersecurity is becoming closely connected with AI and software engineering. Relevant skills include:

  • API security and authentication.
  • Cloud security and access management.
  • Secure software development.
  • Threat detection and incident response.
  • AI security and risk assessment.

A larger industry observation: Building an AI application is only part of the challenge. Making sure that application cannot expose customer data or trigger unauthorised transactions is equally important.
