OpenAI and Synopsys have announced a strategic partnership to develop GPT-Synopsys, a specialised AI model for semiconductor design and electronic-design-automation (EDA) workflows.
According to Synopsys, the multi-year agreement combines OpenAI's frontier AI capabilities with Synopsys' EDA tools and chip-design expertise. OpenAI will license Synopsys' EDA tools to develop the model, and the companies will collaborate on R&D and go-to-market under a shared revenue framework.
AI careers beyond software
This demonstrates that AI careers are expanding into specialised engineering domains:
- AI + Semiconductors
- AI + Electronics
- AI + VLSI
- AI + Embedded Systems
- AI + Simulation
- AI + Hardware Design
For ECE, E&TC, Electrical and related engineering students, moving into AI does not necessarily mean abandoning their original discipline.
Takeaway: Combining AI knowledge with domain expertise can open different technical career paths.
