OpenAI currently lists multiple India-based technical roles on its careers site, including Applied AI Engineer, Applied AI Architect and Partner AI Deployment Engineer.
The roles provide a useful picture of production AI work.
According to OpenAI's own role descriptions, the Applied AI Engineer role involves taking ideas "from use-case selection and architecture through prototyping, evaluation, production launch, and scale", writing and debugging code, building evaluation systems, resolving complex integrations, and guiding decisions on model behaviour, reliability, latency, cost, safety, security, governance and operational readiness. OpenAI states that success is measured by production systems and customer impact, "not simply activity or successful demonstrations".
The career lesson is broader than OpenAI itself.
AI engineering is not simply prompting a model or connecting an LLM API.
Modern AI systems increasingly sit at the intersection of:
AI + Software Engineering + Evaluation + Deployment + Security + Reliability
Takeaway
Students interested in AI engineering should learn how complete AI systems are designed, evaluated and deployed.
