India’s tech vacancies rise, but freshers face a narrower entry-level market

Career context, not a new announcement today

This article revisits India Today’s 7 October 2026 report on Xpheno’s Active Tech Jobs Outlook. It is included in the 19 October briefing as context for interpreting current AI and hiring developments, not presented as newly released data.

What did the report show?

India Today reported 1.23 lakh active technology openings in October, the highest level in 18 months at the time of publication. Of these, 15,000 were classified as entry-level and 68,000 as mid-senior openings.

The report also noted that entry-level openings had risen year on year but fallen compared with September. The picture was therefore mixed: the overall market was expanding, while experienced candidates accounted for a much larger share of active demand.

These figures describe active vacancies reported in the outlook, not completed hires, guaranteed placements or a count of jobs reserved for graduates.

What does this mean for students?

A general increase in technology vacancies does not necessarily translate into an equally large rise in fresher opportunities. Different experience levels and roles have different requirements, and a headline total can conceal that variation.

Students should review real entry-level job descriptions, identify recurring requirements and prepare evidence of their abilities. A portfolio can demonstrate applied work, but it cannot replace every role’s required fundamentals or guarantee a job.

Practical takeaways

  • Compare requirements across actual entry-level roles rather than rely on market headlines.
  • Strengthen programming, debugging and problem-solving fundamentals relevant to the roles you seek.
  • Build projects with clear documentation and explain the decisions you made.
  • Practise describing your contribution, limitations and lessons learned.
  • Track vacancy data by experience level and reporting period.

The broader lesson

A recovering market is encouraging, but preparation should be targeted. Focus on matching the evidence you can show to the requirements employers actually state, without treating a project, certificate or market recovery as a placement guarantee.
