The Tech Job Market Isn't Simply Shrinking. The Skills Companies Need Are Changing.
India's technology market is seeing restructuring and growth at once, making changing capability requirements more useful than simple job-loss narratives.

India's technology employment market is showing two developments at the same time.
Traditional IT hiring is under pressure and some employers are restructuring their workforces. At the same time, opportunities are expanding in global capability centres, semiconductors, manufacturing and specialised technology roles.
Mint reports that multinational companies including Oracle, PayPal, Amazon, Adidas and Meta collectively reduced approximately 12,000–15,000 India-based roles during the preceding 12 months as part of broader global restructuring. The report also points to hiring demand in areas such as cybersecurity, product design and advanced analytics.
A change in composition, not a single story
These developments should not be compressed into another simplistic “AI is taking jobs” headline. Workforce decisions reflect many factors, including global cost restructuring, changing investment priorities and demand for different technical capabilities.
A more useful interpretation is that the composition of technology employment is changing. Software engineering increasingly intersects with AI, deployment, security, data, product work and knowledge of particular industries. Companies may reduce roles in one area while building teams in another.
That creates uncertainty, but it also makes skill signals more important. Learners cannot predict every job title that will grow. They can prepare for work that transfers across titles: writing dependable software, working with data, integrating systems, evaluating AI outputs, understanding deployment and communicating technical decisions.
The same principle appears in the rise of roles such as the Forward-Deployed Engineer, where technical ability is combined with customer problems and operational delivery.
For students and early-career professionals, the central question is therefore not simply whether technology jobs are growing or shrinking. It is which capabilities organisations are beginning to value and how those capabilities can be demonstrated.
Takeaway
Career preparation should follow changing skill requirements, not just traditional job titles.
