AI upskilling in India is no longer a fresher story. A Financial Express report finds demand for AI courses is increasingly driven by experienced professionals and business leaders, as AI moves from an emerging skill to something expected inside existing jobs.
The numbers behind the shift:
Simplilearn: AI course enrolments up more than 40% year-on-year, with agentic AI courses growing over 100% among working professionals. Around 89% of its AI learners are self-funded, and roughly half are using upskilling to strengthen their current roles while another 30–35% prepare for new AI-focused opportunities.
Coursera: AI course enrolments in India rose about 37% in the first half of 2026, with around five GenAI enrolments every minute, up from three a minute last year.
upGrad: freshers now account for about 20% of enrolments, down from around 30%, while learners with more than 10 years' experience have nearly doubled.
Interest is moving toward agentic AI, AI strategy, cybersecurity and practical implementation — building and deploying AI, not just understanding it.
Takeaway
The competition for AI opportunities now includes professionals with a decade of domain experience who are learning to apply AI to it. Students and early-career learners should assume employers will compare them against candidates who combine deep industry knowledge with hands-on AI skills — and build project evidence early.
