GitLab Strengthens Security and Governance for AI-Generated Software
GitLab's Governed Software Factory adds a Dependency Firewall, secrets management and AI analytics as agentic development grows 200% on its platform.

GitLab has introduced new capabilities under its Governed Software Factory initiative, aimed at helping companies manage AI-assisted software development more securely.
These include a Dependency Firewall designed to block problematic software packages, secrets management, security controls and analytics for measuring AI development activity. GitLab also reports that active users of agentic software development on its platform increased 200% year over year during its latest three-month measurement period. That figure is specific to GitLab's platform, not the entire software industry.
The announcement highlights an increasingly important distinction: AI can generate software, but organisations still need to know whether that software is secure, maintainable and ready for production.
Why it matters for students
Software-engineering fundamentals such as dependency management, authentication, CI/CD, testing and secure deployment remain valuable even when AI writes much of the initial code.
