AI Can Write More Code. GitHub Says Developers Need These 3 Skills Now.

In a GitHub Blog post published on 2 October, GitHub says developers should strengthen three areas as AI becomes more capable:

1. Learn to direct AI agents
2. Critically review AI output
3. Keep technical judgment at the centre of the workflow

AI can increasingly perform implementation work, generate tests and assist with documentation.

But developers remain responsible for defining problems, providing context, evaluating generated code, understanding trade-offs and deciding what is actually ready to ship.

This changes the developer workflow without eliminating the need for engineering knowledge.

The more implementation AI performs, the more important it becomes for developers to recognise when generated code is incorrect, insecure, inefficient or inappropriate.

Takeaway: AI can accelerate implementation. Technical judgment determines whether the result should actually be shipped.
