We Looked at a 2026 Fresher Software Job. Here's What Companies Actually Want.

Current early-career software hiring provides a useful signal about how entry-level engineering is changing. We looked at one example: Zycus's AI-Native Java Engineer – Graduate Trainee role for 2026 passouts (0–1 years, Bangalore).

According to that listing and Zycus's description of the role, traditional computer-science fundamentals remain important: programming, problem-solving, backend development with Java and Spring Boot, REST APIs, databases, clean and testable code, and code reviews.

But AI-assisted development is being added on top of those foundations. The role description asks for candidates who use AI tools such as ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, Cursor or Gemini for learning, coding and productivity, and who will use AI to assist with coding, debugging, testing and documentation.

This is one employer's listing, not a description of every software job. But it reflects a pattern worth noticing: employers also value projects, internships, hackathons, open-source work and a demonstrated ability to build — Zycus itself lists an AI-Native Java Developer hiring hackathon among its openings.

The emerging skill stack looks more like:

Computer Science Fundamentals → Software Engineering → AI-Assisted Development → Projects → Demonstrated Capability

AI has not made engineering fundamentals irrelevant. It is changing how those fundamentals are applied.

Takeaway: Don't replace software-engineering fundamentals with AI. Build AI capability on top of them.
