What happened?
The Associated Press reported that at least eight US states are suing OpenAI, alleging that ChatGPT violated state consumer protection laws by harming children and deceiving adults. The allegations include concerns about unsafe responses and inadequate safeguards for vulnerable users.
These are legal allegations, not final court findings. OpenAI has said it has built safety protections into ChatGPT for children and will continue to improve them, and the outcome of the cases remains unresolved.
Why does this matter beyond the legal dispute?
AI systems can produce fluent answers that are incomplete, inaccurate or inappropriate for a situation. The more widely they are used, the more important it is to understand their limits.
For developers and organisations, responsible deployment includes:
- Evaluating outputs.
- Protecting personal data.
- Defining appropriate use cases.
- Deciding when a human should review a result.
What students building AI projects should do
Test more than the ideal example. Ask what happens when the system meets misleading inputs, sensitive information or a question it cannot reliably answer. A convincing AI answer is not necessarily a correct or safe one.
