Companies Aren't Just Asking AI Questions Anymore. They're Starting to Let AI Operate Software.
Swiggy, Tata Steel, HDFC Bank and NPCI are putting agentic AI into business workflows. Agents that act need far more engineering than chatbots that answer.

Indian companies including Swiggy, Tata Steel, HDFC Bank and NPCI are experimenting with or deploying agentic AI systems in business workflows, Express Computer reports. Express Computer has separately reported that Tata Steel deployed more than 300 specialised AI agents in nine months with Google Cloud.
Unlike a basic chatbot, an agent may need to authenticate users, access APIs and databases, interact with tools, retain context and execute actions safely. A wrong answer from a chatbot is a quality problem; a wrong action from an agent can change records, move money or trigger downstream processes.
This increases the importance of:
API Development + Authentication + Databases + MCP + System Design + Permissions + Security + Monitoring + Evaluation
These examples come from large organisations with significant engineering resources, and the depth of deployment varies by company. They are a signal of direction rather than a description of how every business operates today.
Takeaway
Students learning agentic AI should move beyond simple tool-calling demos and understand how agents interact safely with real software systems.
