The Best AI Model Isn't Always the Most Powerful One.
GPT-6 Sol and Luna offer different balances of capability, speed and cost — reinforcing why production model selection is an engineering decision.

OpenAI has expanded the GPT-6 family with GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, two models designed around different balances of capability, speed and cost.
Sol is positioned for demanding reasoning, coding and agentic workloads. Luna is designed for efficient, high-volume tasks. OpenAI's model documentation and API changelog place both within a broader effort to give developers more choice across workload requirements rather than a single default model for every application.
Capability is only one production constraint
A benchmark can help an engineering team understand what a model may be capable of, but it cannot decide whether that model fits a production system. Teams also have to consider response time, inference cost, throughput, reliability, context requirements and the consequences of an incorrect answer.
The same distinction applies to prompt caching. OpenAI's documentation describes caching as a mechanism for reducing the cost and latency of repeated prompt prefixes. That makes prompt structure and repeated context part of an application's systems design, not merely a detail hidden behind the model endpoint.
A complex coding agent may justify a model optimised for difficult reasoning. A high-volume classification or extraction service may benefit more from a faster, lower-cost model with sufficient accuracy for a narrow task. Many real products will use several models, routing each request according to risk and complexity.
This is also why evaluating a model only on headline capability can be misleading. The right question is not simply “Which model scores highest?” It is “Which model meets this system's quality threshold at an acceptable cost, latency and level of operational risk?”
Model economics are becoming equally important as frontier providers compete on practical deployment characteristics.
Takeaway
Model selection is becoming an engineering decision, not simply a benchmark decision.
