Anthropic Launches Claude Haiku 5.5 for Faster, Lower-Cost AI Applications
Anthropic's new small model targets high-volume AI workloads where speed and operating cost matter more than raw power.

Anthropic has released Claude Haiku 5.5, expanding its Claude 5.5 model family. The company describes it as its fastest, cheapest and most capable small model yet, designed for applications where response speed and operating costs are especially important.
This is important because developers don't always need the most powerful model for every task. Applications such as document classification, information extraction, customer-support routing and some AI-agent operations may benefit from smaller models that can process large volumes of requests economically.
As AI becomes embedded in more products, engineering decisions increasingly involve balancing model quality, latency, token consumption and cost.
Why it matters for students
Building an AI application isn't just about choosing the newest model. Understanding model selection, benchmarking and inference economics can help students design more practical systems.
