When Everyone Knows How to Use AI, What Will Actually Differentiate You?

Google and the ITU are widening access to AI training, raising a harder question for learners: what evidence will distinguish applied capability?

When Everyone Knows How to Use AI, What Will Actually Differentiate You?

Google is providing 100,000 certificate scholarships through the International Telecommunication Union's AI Skills Coalition, supporting AI and digital-skills training across more than 80 countries.

The initiative is another signal that basic AI literacy is becoming more accessible. Google says the training will be delivered through local governments and the Giga network to help students, educators and workers build job-ready digital skills.

From access to evidence

Wider access is valuable. It can help more people understand what AI systems can do, how to use them responsibly and where they fit into work and education. It also changes what counts as differentiation.

If more learners know how to prompt a model or use common AI tools, those abilities become a starting point rather than a complete professional profile. Employers and collaborators still need evidence that someone can apply the tools to a real problem, make sound decisions and produce a dependable result.

A useful progression is:

AI awareness → AI literacy → AI application → Building → Problem solving → Demonstrated capability

Each step adds something that tool familiarity alone cannot show. Building exposes trade-offs. Problem solving requires selecting the right approach rather than following a tutorial. Demonstrated capability makes the work inspectable through a working project, clear documentation, evaluation results or a thoughtful explanation of decisions.

This does not reduce the value of foundational education or certificates. It places them within a larger path. Learning creates the base; projects and evidence show how that learning can be used.

That distinction is especially important as AI interfaces become easier to operate. The ability to produce an output may become common. The ability to judge its quality, integrate it into a reliable system and explain why the approach works remains more demanding.

Takeaway

AI literacy may become baseline knowledge; applied capability is what can differentiate a profile.
