Microsoft's 2026 Digital Defense Report shows AI affecting both sides of cybersecurity.
Threat actors are using AI to increase the speed and scale of activities including reconnaissance, vulnerability discovery, social engineering and parts of attack workflows. Microsoft notes that, for now, much of this use remains focused on specific parts of existing attack workflows.
At the same time, defenders can use AI to discover weaknesses earlier, connect security signals faster and respond more quickly.
This creates an important career combination:
Cybersecurity + AI
Students interested in security increasingly benefit from understanding both traditional security foundations and how AI systems, agents, identities, permissions and tools interact.
Takeaway
AI doesn't replace cybersecurity fundamentals. It makes understanding those fundamentals even more important.
