Agentic AI Is Starting to Appear in Actual Job Titles. What Skills Sit Behind It?

Current listings on AI Hiring Board provide a limited but useful directional signal around Agentic AI employment terminology.

At the time of review, the board's PwC page listed 16 open AI roles globally, including several positions associated with Bengaluru or Bangalore. Titles included roles specifically framed around Azure AI, machine learning and Agentic AI Engineering, as well as a management role covering GenAI, Agentic AI and data science.

These figures are a point-in-time snapshot from one job board. They are not representative of the entire Bengaluru or Indian AI employment market, and the count will change as listings open and close.

Look beneath the label

What is more useful than the count is the terminology appearing in real listings. Agentic AI is beginning to show up not only in technical discussions but also in some job titles.

The phrase can sound like a new standalone speciality, but the work underneath it draws on established engineering capabilities. Python and software engineering provide the foundation. APIs and tool calling allow a model to act on external systems. Retrieval-augmented generation supplies relevant information. Evaluation checks whether the system behaves reliably. Deployment and monitoring keep it working beyond a demonstration.

System integration is equally important. An agent is useful only when it can operate within permissions, data boundaries and business workflows. Engineers also need to understand failure modes: tools may return errors, retrieved context may be incomplete and multi-step actions may compound mistakes.

This is why learning the vocabulary without the underlying capabilities offers limited value. A stronger preparation path is to build a small agentic system, define what success means, test it against difficult cases and document where human oversight remains necessary.

Takeaway

Don't learn “Agentic AI” as a buzzword. Understand the engineering capabilities underneath it.
